Why is My Toilet Running?
One of the most common reasons for high water bills in the Sacramento area is a leaking toilet.
These small drips can add up to gallons of wasted water every day.
This can cost you money and puts a strain on our local water supply.
But don’t worry—catching leaks early is easier than you might think!
Here’s a quick trick to check if your toilet has a leak.
Food Coloring Test
Remove the lid from your toilet tank, flush, and wait for the tank to refill.
Put 4-5 drops (no more than 5) of food coloring in your toilet tank (not the bowl) and wait about 15 minutes without flushing.
If you see color seeping into the toilet bowl, you’ve got a leak.
Flush the toilet to remove the food color.
Check the Following:
- toilet flushing handle raises the flapper properly.
- toilet flapper makes a tight seal.
- toilet float and water level is too high.
- the chain is tangled
